Seo mistakes

I came across a useful post over on 60 days to 100k which covers some of the more common mistakes made by webmasters.
A number of them cover what might be referred to as "black hat" tactics, while others should be common sense. One of the points that is worth emphasising is related to hosting. It might seem obvious to a web professional, but there are still so many sites out there promoting businesses that rely on free hosting. There are two basic types of free host. The more common one is the Geocities type setup, where an ISP or other provider gives away web space to users with or without forcing ads onto their pages. Although this may seem to be attractive if you merely want some web space to "play with" it is not a good longterm strategy. Why? There are a number of reasons:
  • Web address - you end up with something like http://www.yourprovider.com/~username
  • Technologies - you may be severely limited
A lot of search engines will ignore free webspace providers or only crawl them periodically. You will also find that you are restricted in what you can do. You probably won't have access to technologies such as PHP or Perl or database support. The other type of free hosting provider gives away webspace either in return for ad revenue or higher priced domain names etc., The downside with these may be in the small type. Make sure you read the terms and conditions very carefully! Another downside is reliability. If the hosting provider is not getting paid they may be using cheap hardware and/or bandwidth, so your website's uptime might not be stable. If your site is "down" it cannot be crawled or may even be delisted.
