Chapter 1987 Can your sleepwalking be cured?
Although it's a county town, you can still hear the cicadas chirping, and they sing even more merrily after nightfall.
Lying in bed, Chen Zhaodi suddenly woke up with a start, drenched in sweat, her forehead covered in fine beads of perspiration. Since learning of her son's death, she had been plagued by nightmares every night, leading to chronic insomnia and a general lack of energy.
Looking at the ceiling above me by the moonlight streaming through the window, I was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when I suddenly realized that someone was standing next to my bed.
"Ah!!" A piercing scream echoed throughout the room.
With a click, the dark figure standing by the bed switched on the bedside lamp.
Zhang Ran looked apologetically at her mother, who was screaming in terror.
"What are you doing standing here so late at night instead of sleeping?" Chen Zhaodi looked at her innocent-looking daughter with lingering fear, her image overlapping with that of the daughter in her nightmare.
“I developed sleepwalking after my brother passed away.” Zhang Ran’s eyes suddenly reddened. “I miss my brother.”
Mentioning her son Luo Yaozu, Chen Zhaodi's eyes also reddened. "I miss him too." She reached out and patted the bed. "Come up here and tell me, how did you and your brother live after I went to jail?"
Zhang Ran got into bed and lay down next to her. "After you went to jail, everyone in the village bullied me and my brother... I didn't protect my brother well, and he was shot and killed by the kidnappers." She turned to her side and stared straight at her mother: "Mom, will you blame me?"
Their eyes met, and Chen Zhaodi's eyes reddened as tears streamed down her face. "How could I blame you?" She reached out and turned off the bedside lamp. "It's my fault as his mother. I failed to protect him and let him be killed!"
In the darkness, Zhang Ran could hear the deep hatred in her voice, but she couldn't see the expression on her face. "Those who killed him are all dead now. My brother can rest in peace now."
Chen Zhaodi was silent for a moment, then asked softly, "Where is Yaozu buried? I want to go see him tomorrow."
“Okay,” Zhang Ran readily agreed. “It’s also a good opportunity to visit my grandma and uncle. I’ve been so busy with school these past few years that I haven’t been back to the village to pay respects at their graves in a long time.”
Chen Zhaodi: "...Your maternal grandfather visited me in prison and told me about your maternal grandmother and uncle."
"Did Grandpa tell you that I killed Grandma and Uncle?" Zhang Ran's tone was full of grievance.
"...Your maternal grandfather only had your uncle as his son, and he suddenly passed away. He was heartbroken, but don't take his words to heart. Your maternal grandmother and uncle were both killed by man-eating bears; it has nothing to do with you."
"Thank you, Mom, for believing me." Zhang Ran excitedly reached out and pinched her arm. "The tour guide said there are man-eating bears in the deep mountains and forests. I tried to persuade my uncle, but he wouldn't listen and even kicked me off the bus. Who would have thought they would be so unlucky as to encounter a man-eating bear and lose their lives? I haven't dared to go back these past few years. My grandfather hates me and said he wants to kill me."
"Don't be afraid. Your grandfather is old. He was just saying that in anger. When we get back, I'll have a good talk with him, and he'll listen."
"Thank you, Mom, you're so kind."
Chen Zhaodi heard her playful laughter right beside him, but his body was tense. "...Can your sleepwalking be cured?"
"The doctor said it was due to excessive stress and that it couldn't be cured. He told me to go out for walks more often, and maybe it would heal itself."
In the darkness, no one spoke again; they slept in the same bed but dreamed different dreams, and neither of them slept through the night.
Because we were going back to visit the graves, we first went to a funeral supply store and bought some yellow paper to put in the trunk.
After getting back into the car, Chen Zhaodi, who seemed even more energetic than yesterday, suddenly looked at Dongchan, who was driving, and asked, "Is this your friend?"
“She’s my driver,” Zhang Ran explained with a smile.
"Is this car yours too? How much did you pay for it?"
"I bought it several years ago, and it didn't cost much money."
The mother and daughter were chatting happily. Dongchan glanced at them through the rearview mirror. They seemed to be smiling, but the smiles didn't reach their eyes.
