Chapter 43 Secret Base
Chapter 43 Secret Base
Li Wei opened his mouth, intending to continue with the white lie.
But seeing the faint expectation in Harvey's eyes, he couldn't bring himself to say the words he had prepared.
"Not yet," he said softly, his voice tinged with reluctance. "But the doctor said that if treatment continues, Rachel has a very good chance of waking up."
Harvey lowered his head, then suddenly laughed, a laugh filled with self-mockery: "I know you're lying to me. She's dead, isn't she? Dead in that explosion."
"She's not dead!" Li Wei couldn't help but raise his voice, his tone urgent. "She's just temporarily unconscious, but I think if she wakes up, she'll definitely be waiting for you!"
"Are you waiting for me, this monster?"
Harvey looked up at the coin in Levi's hand, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes. "Look, it also says I should live, but living is more painful than dying."
Seeing Harvey's state, Li Wei didn't know how to persuade him and could only remain silent.
Looking at Harvey's dejected face, he found it hard to believe that this was the same spirited prosecutor.
"Go." Harvey turned around again, his back to the door, his voice low and weary. "If Rachel really wakes up, please tell her... forget about me."
Thank you, Mr. Levi...
Li Wei picked up the coin, said nothing, and slowly walked out of the ward.
The screams and wails in the corridor continued. He glanced back at the tightly closed glass door and suddenly realized that Arkham imprisoned more than just sinners driven to madness.
When he walked out of the mental hospital, the sun was shining brightly, but it couldn't dispel the gloom in Li Wei's heart.
He looked out at Gotham City in the distance, where skyscrapers stood tall and traffic flowed, looking no different from usual.
He felt the coins in his pocket—tossed them up, caught them, and tossed them up again.
Front, back, front, back... Li Wei was having a blast, and felt like his worries had lessened considerably.
...
Raindrops tapped against the window, making a dull sound.
Li Wei's computer screen glowed with a ghostly blue light, connected to the Gotham Police Department's internal network.
He was deleting all records related to Harvey's corruption, and his finger paused involuntarily as the cursor hovered over the name "Harvey Dent".
"Not finished deleting yet?"
A deep voice suddenly came from behind.
Li Wei turned around abruptly and saw Batman standing in the shadows, dripping from the edge of his cape.
Rainwater slid down the cold, hard edges of the helmet, forming small puddles on the floor.
"This is the last one." Levi turned his head and pressed the delete button. "Including Ramirez's recorded testimony and Watts's backup testimony, everything has been cleaned up."
He paused, then added, "I kept a copy, stored on an encrypted hard drive."
Batman took a few steps closer, the blue light from the screen reflecting off his helmet and outlining his cold, hard features: "Why?"
"Because the truth shouldn't be buried forever," Levi's voice was soft, yet unusually firm. "Perhaps one day, Gotham will grow strong enough to bear it."
He took a palm-sized hard drive from the drawer, stuffed it into a waterproof bag, and said, "I plan to hide it in the mezzanine of the clock tower in the city hall, where only the three of us will know."
"Since you're here, come with me."
Batman remained silent, which was tantamount to acquiescing to his actions.
...
In the attic of the clock tower in the city hall, there were several cardboard boxes piled up in a corner, containing various clues that Li Wei had compiled.
—Regarding the remnants of the gangs, and the corrupt police officers who have not yet been brought to justice.
As for why he chose this attic, it was because Levi felt that since Batman had the Batcave, he should also have his own secret base.
He crouched down and pulled a photo out of a cardboard box; it was a picture of Harvey, Rachel, and Gordon together.
The three of them stood in the sunlight, their faces beaming with smiles.
"Tell me, did we do the right thing?" Li Wei asked softly. "Using one lie to protect another—is this the kind of 'justice' Gotham really needs?"
Batman walked to the window and looked at the city night view blurred by the rain.
"Gotham needs heroes, even fictional ones."
He said in a deep voice, "But we must live in reality. Only in this way can we hold the line in the darkness."
Batman's figure appeared exceptionally lonely, like a silent statue, quietly guarding this imperfect city.
"Rumors are already circulating that Harvey betrayed his own sense of justice."
Li Wei stood up, walked to his side, and spoke with a hint of worry in his voice.
"Let them say what they want, no one can verify it anyway."
Batman's voice remained completely calm: "As time goes by, people will soon forget about this. These rumors are nothing."
He turned around and handed over a small communicator. "It's an encrypted channel, only you, me, and Gordon can access it for easy communication later."
Li Wei took the communicator Batman handed him and examined it carefully.
The communicator is very small, with a cool black metal casing that feels heavy in the hand.
Without a doubt, this is absolutely a masterpiece by Fox.
"Okay, Batman, I'll take the gift. Thank you for it."
Li Wei stretched and said, "Could you please take me home? I'm exhausted these past few days."
Li Wei has been busy with various things lately and hasn't had a chance to rest properly. He is indeed quite exhausted.
The Batmobile feels great; having Batman run errands is pretty good.
Batman didn't respond, but simply patted Levi on the shoulder before leaping out of the window.
"Dude, I'm not a taxi driver!"
The cloak drew a black arc in the rain before quickly disappearing into the deep night.
Watching Batman run away, Levi shrugged indifferently.
"You disloyal bastard, I'll expose you sooner or later."
The rain was still falling, but the attic was quiet.
After confirming that everything was in place, Li Wei left the attic through the pipes.
Not long after he left, a sound came from the pipe.
The sound was light and graceful, like an elegant cat walking through a pipe.
Soon a slender figure in black appeared in the attic. She checked the contents of several boxes and finally took out the photo that Li Wei had tucked among the documents.
"What a careless guy, how could he just leave these documents lying around like that?"
Catwoman made a couple of sarcastic remarks about Li Wei, then restored everything to its original state.
She completely overlooked the fact that not everyone has the same keen intuition as her.
After doing all this, Catwoman clapped her hands in satisfaction. Once she was sure she hadn't left any trace, she left through the pipe.
For some reason, discovering Li Wei's secret made her feel extremely happy.
Li Wei, of course, had no idea what was happening in the attic, nor did he know that his secret had been seen through by the catwoman.
Even if he knew, he probably wouldn't care, since it wasn't really anything shameful.
He had just finished showering and was lying happily in bed.
He's been so busy lately that he hasn't had a proper rest.
Fortunately, it's all finally over, and he finally has time to rest.
Li Wei leaned against the headboard, opened the game interface, and began to tally up his gains over the past period.
