Chapter 3 Who is the Patient?
Chapter 3 Who is the Patient?
The rain in Changxiang started suddenly, pattering against the glass door of the pharmacy.
At 3 p.m., there wasn't much business in the store.
Boss Liu was dozing off on the counter, while Wang Minyu was tidying up the Chinese medicine cabinet, picking out some damp herbs.
The wind chimes at the door rang.
A wave of damp air rushed in, accompanied by the sound of an umbrella being closed.
"Excuse me, is there a doctor here named Wang Minyu?"
His voice was a little hoarse, carrying a deliberate, restrained tremor.
Wang Minyu's hand, which was grasping the medicine, suddenly stopped in mid-air.
Even after eighteen years, even though his memory had become hazy, a certain frequency in that voice could still pierce his eardrums like a needle.
He slowly turned around.
A middle-aged couple stood at the door.
The man had a slight limp and was wearing an obviously ill-fitting, cheap suit with mud spots all over the cuffs.
The woman had a head of dark red curly hair, and her eyes drooped, giving her a shrewd and bitter look.
These were his biological parents, Wang Jianguo and Li Xiumei.
The air seemed to freeze for a few seconds.
Mr. Liu was woken up by the noise and groggily looked up: "Looking for Xiao Wang? He's over there."
Wang Jianguo followed Boss Liu's finger and looked over, his gaze landing on Wang Minyu.
For a fleeting moment, a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, followed by a greedy look as if he had spotted prey.
"Minyu! It really is you!" Li Xiumei burst into tears, rushing forward to grab Wang Minyu's hand. "My son! I've been looking for you so hard! How could you be so heartless, not even answering your phone!"
Wang Minyu took a step back, avoiding the rough hands that were worn out from years of farm work.
His expression was frighteningly calm, even colder than when he was facing the bald man eating melon rinds.
"Get to the point, don't resort to violence."
"How dare you talk to your mother like that?" Wang Jianguo said sternly, adopting a fatherly demeanor. "We're your parents! We raised you to six years old, and this is how you repay us?"
"Six years old." Wang Minyu chewed on the word, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, you dumped me at the orphanage gate when I was six, saying you were going to buy steamed buns. You've been buying those buns for eighteen years. I'd like to ask, were they bought in America? And they're still not ready?"
The atmosphere in the store instantly plummeted to freezing point.
Boss Liu was completely sober, staring wide-eyed at this dramatic family drama, forgetting even to crack the sunflower seeds in his hand.
Li Xiumei's sobs faltered for a moment, then she cried even louder, even trying to sit on the ground: "It's because we were incompetent! Our family was poor, we simply couldn't support you... Now we know we were wrong, we just want to make it up to you..."
"Make amends?" Wang Minyu interrupted her. "How? Do you want me to donate bone marrow to that brother I've never met to make amends?"
Having his motives exposed, Wang Jianguo felt a little embarrassed, but he quickly regained his composure: "He's your own brother! Only fifteen years old! He has that disease, and only your bone marrow can save him! The doctor said you're a perfect match! This is fate, Minyu! Please, do him a favor and save him!"
"Why should I save you?" Wang Minyu retorted, his eyes sharp as knives. "When you threw me away, did you ever consider that I was a life too? Now that I'm useful, a spare parts depot, you suddenly remember I'm your son?"
"How can you be so cold-blooded!" Wang Jianguo exclaimed, even trying to rush into the counter. "That's just a little bone marrow, it won't kill you! You're a doctor, don't you understand this basic principle?"
"I'm a doctor, of course I know." Wang Minyu looked at him coldly, "But I'm also a human being. I can give my body to whomever I want, and if I don't want to, even the King of Heaven himself can't help me."
"You! You're being unfilial! I'm going to sue you! I'll let everyone know what kind of person you are!" Li Xiumei got up from the ground and pointed at Wang Minyu's nose, cursing him.
Just then, a commotion suddenly broke out outside the door.
"Make way! Make way, everyone! Where is this shop?"
The bald man from before, accompanied by four or five equally burly men, pushed open the door and entered.
Although the group looked fierce, they were all carrying fruit baskets, banners, and even a roast chicken.
"Miracle doctor! Oh, miracle doctor! My foot really doesn't hurt anymore! I won over three thousand playing cards this afternoon!" The bald man shouted as soon as he walked in. Seeing the tense atmosphere in the shop, he paused for a moment, "What's going on? Is someone causing trouble?"
Wang Minyu glanced at the bald man and said indifferently, "It's nothing, just ran into two people causing trouble at a hospital."
"Medical dispute?" The bald man's eyebrows furrowed, and the fat on his face twitched.
He already disliked the two men; they were soaking wet and smelled of dirt, and they were even pointing at the doctor and cursing.
"Damn it! You dare cause trouble in the 'miracle doctor's' shop?" The bald man turned around, looking down at Wang Jianguo. "Old man, what do you want? Who are you going to sue? Who are you going to sue?"
Wang Jianguo was so terrified by the group of tattooed, burly men that his legs went weak, and his earlier bravado vanished instantly: "I...I'm his father! I'm disciplining my son!"
"Dad?" The bald man sneered. "I bet you're a beggar. How could a refined man like this 'miracle doctor' have a father like you? Besides, even if he is your son, he earns his living through his own abilities. Why should you lecture him? Are you the doctor or is he the doctor?"
Several henchmen surrounded him, each with their arms crossed and glaring, creating a suffocatingly oppressive atmosphere.
Li Xiumei was so frightened that she hid behind Wang Jianguo and didn't dare to say a word.
Wang Minyu watched this scene without any emotional reaction; he even felt a little amused.
This is what is called family affection—fragile and easily broken in the face of violence.
But he didn't want these thugs to make a big fuss, since he still had to work there.
"Alright." Wang Minyu walked out from behind the counter, holding a silver needle in his hand, which gleamed coldly under the light.
He waved to the bald man, signaling them to move aside.
Then he walked up to Wang Jianguo.
"Didn't you say I was unfilial? Didn't you say I'm a doctor? Fine, I'll fulfill my duties as a doctor right now."
Wang Minyu suddenly reached out and grabbed Wang Jianguo's wrist.
"What...what are you going to do!" Wang Jianguo tried to struggle, but found that the seemingly thin young man had an astonishingly strong grip, like an iron clamp.
"I use the four diagnostic methods: observation, listening, questioning, and palpation. I see that your forehead is dark, your eyes are bloodshot, and you are breathing rapidly. These are signs of excessive liver fire, which can easily lead to a stroke." Wang Minyu spoke calmly, as if he were truly examining a patient. "As your son, I have to treat you."
Before he finished speaking, the silver needle in his hand suddenly pierced Wang Jianguo's Hegu acupoint at the base of his thumb.
This time, he used a bit more force.
"ah--!!!"
A bloodcurdling scream, like a pig being slaughtered, echoed throughout the pharmacy.
That tingling sensation shot straight to the top of my head, as if an electric current had exploded from my arm directly into my brain.
"Does it hurt?" Wang Minyu asked.
"It hurts! It hurts so much! Let go!" Wang Jianguo cried and snot streamed down his face, and he was trembling all over.
"It's supposed to hurt. This is called a 'mind-awakening needle.'" Wang Minyu pulled out the needle and quickly pricked his other hand. "This needle will cure your evil intentions."
"ah--!!"
More screams.
The bald man next to him watched with great interest and couldn't help but applaud: "Great! This doctor's acupuncture technique is amazing! It can cure any kind of stubbornness!"
Wang Minyu released his grip, and Wang Jianguo collapsed to the ground like a lump of mud, clutching his hand and convulsing uncontrollably.
"Got it?" Wang Minyu squatted down, looking at the trembling parents. His voice was soft but cold. "This is just the first treatment. If you bother me again, or my friends, I don't mind giving you a full 'acupuncture package.' I'm a medical student; I know where it hurts the most, and you won't even be able to detect the injury."
Looking at her unfamiliar son, Li Xiumei finally felt a deep sense of fear.
This is not the little lamb they can manipulate; this is a wolf in a white coat.
"roll."
Wang Minyu stood up and said only one word.
Wang Jianguo and Li Xiumei exchanged a glance, then scrambled out of the pharmacy, forgetting even to take their umbrellas, and disappeared into the rain in an instant.
The shop returned to quiet.
Boss Liu swallowed hard, a hint of awe creeping into his eyes as he looked at Wang Minyu: "Young Wang, aren't you... a bit too ruthless?"
"Is it harsh?" Wang Minyu took out an alcohol swab and wiped the silver needles. "This is to treat the sick and save lives. To cure their greed and save my own life."
The bald man walked over and slammed the banner on the counter: "Miracle Doctor! I love your personality! This banner may be a bit tacky, but it represents the brothers' sentiments! If anyone in this area dares to cause you trouble in the future, just mention my name, 'Bald Qiang'!"
Wang Minyu glanced at the banner, which bore eight large, gold-embossed characters:
"A miracle cure, a cure for pretentiousness."
He couldn't help but let his lips twitch.
[Congratulations, host, on completing the hidden mission: Decluttering. Through intense emotional stimulation, inflict psychological trauma on your awful relative. Reward: Professional-level 'Micro-expression Psychology'.]
[Current pharmacy reputation: Somewhat well-known (although the reputation is a bit strange).]
Wang Minyu rolled up the banner and tucked it under the counter.
The rain was still falling, but he felt the air was much fresher.
"Boss, I want to have hot pot tonight," Wang Minyu suddenly said.
Boss Liu paused for a moment, then laughed: "Alright! It's on me! To celebrate our store... well, having a prized possession."
